Period Start Date must be specified:
This error message occurs when an employee attempts to login and their effective date is after the TimeStar system’s current pay period date range.
For Example: if the current system’s pay period is 10/14 – 10/27, and the employee’s effective date is 10/28, the employee will receive this error message upon login. Even if today is 10/29 and the pay period of 10/14 – 10/27 isn’t closed, the system will still recognize 10/14-10/27 as the current pay period.
Solution:
- Move the pay period forward by clicking End Period in End of Period Procedure > Pay Period Close.
- For more information on how to close pay periods, please see the Pay Period Close page.
- Backdate an employee’s effective date one pay period. This should only be done if the employee needs to be paid for the current pay period before their current effective date.
To backdate an employee’s effective date, follow the steps listed below:
In the Main Navigation menu, open the Employee Maintenance folder.
Open Employee Information subfolder.
Click on the Profile page.

1. Select the employee to update in the employee dropdown menu
2. Update or enter the effective date for the employee
3. Click
Please note that an employee can still be able to punch in but will not be able to login until the pay period is moved forward.
