Verification Methods

Verifications Overview

Verifications control how employees verify themselves when using the time clocks. These settings are managed through GTConnect, where each user can be assigned one or more verification methods, such as Biometric or Pass If Identified by Badge. When an employee clocks in or out, the system automatically checks the available verification options and uses the first one that’s both supported by the device and set up for that user. If no specific verification methods are assigned, the time clock will use the default methods defined in GTConnect. Keep in mind that a verification method won’t be skipped if an employee fails an attempt — they’ll need to complete a successful verification before proceeding.

Determining Verification Availability

Not all verification methods are available for every user or device. A method may be unavailable if the time clock doesn’t have the required hardware (for example, no biometric reader for fingerprint verification) or if the user hasn’t provided the necessary data (such as no fingerprint templates enrolled, or no PIN assigned). GTConnect automatically detects these conditions to ensure that each employee can verify using the best available method supported by their assigned device.

Using “Identify and Verify in One Step”

When employees use biometric verification (such as a fingerprint scan), the time clock can perform identification and verification in a single step. This means the employee doesn’t need to enter an ID or badge number before placing their finger — the device automatically identifies who they are and verifies their identity at the same time.

This feature streamlines the clock-in and clock-out process by reducing the number of actions required from the employee and minimizing errors related to incorrect ID entry.

Default Verification Methods

If a user doesn’t have any verification methods defined at the person level, the time clock will fall back to the default verification methods configured in the device’s settings.

By default, the system uses the verification order “bio, pin, none”, meaning the device will only request biometric or PIN verification if a valid biometric template or PIN record exists for the employee. If neither is available, the device will allow access without requiring verification. Note: PIN is separate from an employee badge number, see Available Verification Methods below.

Configuring Person-Level Verifications in GTConnect

You can define verification methods for individual users directly within GTConnect. This allows specific employees or groups to use a customized verification process instead of relying on the system defaults.

To configure person-level verifications:

  1. Navigate to People > People in GTConnect.
  2. Select the company at the top of the page to ensure you’re viewing the correct organization.
  3. Click Edit next to the person whose verification settings you’d like to manage.
  4. In the Verify By field, enter the list of methods in the order they should be used (for example: bio, none).
    • The system will try each method in order and use the first one that’s available.

Save your changes. The updated verification settings will automatically sync to all time clocks assigned to that person.

Available Verification Methods

Below is a summary of the verification methods that can be configured in GTConnect or at the device level.
NOTE:
The capitalization of each verification method must match exactly as shown below. For example, use bio rather than Bio or BIO. Incorrect capitalization will prevent the method from being recognized by the system.

Method Description
bio Uses the biometric reader to verify the user’s fingerprint. Skipped if no reader is present or if the user has no biometric templates enrolled.
bioNone Same as bio, but always verifies successfully once the user places a finger on the reader. Useful for testing or when verification should always pass after biometric interaction.
denied Always denies access and displays “Access denied!” on the time clock. Can be used to block individual users from using the device.
none Automatically passes verification without prompting the user. Typically used to disable verification and only require identification.
noneIfBadge Passes verification automatically if the user was identified by badge/card swipe. If identified another way (e.g., by badge number), the next verification method is used.
noneIfBio Passes verification automatically if the user was identified using the biometric reader. If identified another way, the next verification method is used.
pin Prompts the user to enter their PIN. Skipped if the user does not have a PIN assigned in GTConnect.  PIN’s are an additional number entered by the employee AFTER entering their badge number. PIN’s are a verification method.  Badge numbers (assigned in TimeStar) are used for identification.
